Montréal, cet automne, sort ton plus beau pull […] pour une soirée toute spéciale célébrant
CINÉMA et BANDES-SONORES. Palaver Music est fier de présenter une programmation de films, de projections et de performances musicales, qui promet d'explorer les confins de cette illustre plateforme collaborative.

Les FILMS à l'affiche : un documentaire phare du légendaire et iconoclaste Les Blank (É.-U.) sur le musicien Lightnin' Hopkins et sa ville natale, Centerville au Texas (pop. 863); quatre films courts/collages poétiques de diapositives du réalisateur expérimental/professeur Tomonari Nishikawa (JAPON/É.-U.); ainsi qu'une double projection 16mm d'une unique série d'archives médicales par
Eric Poirier (Mtl/CAN);

Le SON se composera : d'une orchestration de bandes magnétiques en boucle de l'artiste sonore szilárd (Brooklyn); du composite avant-gardiste (voix, accordéons, cordes et percussions) de l'octuor féminin, North, My Love (Montréal); et du post-rock cinématique d'Ascent of Everest (Nashville), entamant une tournée au Canada, aux États-Unis et en Europe!

Une installation de senteurs embaumera l'espace. Un DJ set clora la soirée.

Depuis les débuts du cinéma muet, des artistes ont spontanément fait s'imbriquer le SON et l'ÉCRAN de multiples façons. C'est au coeur du Mile-End, dans un espace privilégié et centre des nouveaux médias, que Palaver Music souhaite expérimenter les diverses formes de cette union et montrer comment son exploration s'ouvre à un territoire de création fascinant.

BIOs

Les Blank est un cinéaste américain indépendant, récipiendaire de nombreux prix et acclamé par la critique. Ses documentaires, aussi poétiques qu’intimes, ont conduit le journaliste John Rockwell du New York Times à définir Blank comme un documentariste de la mémoire collective, qui transforme l’anthropologie en art. On le désigne souvent comme le « cinéaste maître de l’américanité ». En 1990, Les Blank recevait le très prestigieux prix Maya Deren de l’American Film Institute pour l’ensemble de sa carrière. Ses films sont prisés par des festivals à travers le monde depuis les années 1960.

Tomonari Nishikawa débuta sa carrière de réalisateur en 2001 et ses films ont depuis été à l’affiche d’importants festivals de films, incluant le New York Film Festival, le Festival international du film de Toronto, le Festival international du film de Singapour et la Berlinale. Nishikawa crée également des installations filmiques. Parmi elles, la « Building 945 » a reçu une subvention (2008) de la Fondation du Museum of Contemporary Cinema (MoCC), dédiée au film expérimental. Il enseigne à l’Université de Binghampton, dans l’État de New York.

Montréalais d’origine, Eric Poirier est un cinéaste, vidéaste et curateur, travaillant surtout à partir d’archives de pellicules de film 8 et 16mm (found footage) afin de créer des films et projections fortement imprégnés d’une pensée anthropologique et qui s’ancrent dans notre mémoire intime et nos racines collectives. « Root Beer » (2010) est son film le plus personnel, créé à partir d’archives de son grand-père paternel. Poirier complète actuellement une maîtrise en études cinématographiques à l’Université de Montréal, sous la direction du professeur André Habib. Il est le cofondateur du populaire Ciné-Club à LaBanque.

Quiconque ait assisté à une performance du groupe The Ascent of Everest, originaire de Nashville, qui superpose habilement des lignes mélodieuses et cinématiques à des orchestrations se rapprochant davantage du classique d'avant-garde que de racines rock, pourra attester de la position singulière du groupe dans le milieu de la musique underground et post-rock.

North, My Love est un grand ensemble orchestral d'accordéons basé à Montréal. Fondé en 2009, il fait la promotion de Sound the Glorious au sein de la communauté locale. Leur premier album éponyme, enregistré dans les studios de The Pines en juin 2010, est disponible de visu ou par la poste seulement. L'ensemble y retournera prochainement pour la création d'un second album avant de s'envoler pour San Francisco et le Japon en novembre pour une série de concerts. North, My Love sera de retour à Montréal en 2012. De nouveaux membres sont bienvenus…!

szilárd est le projet solo du Brooklynois Jeremy Young, guitariste et compositeur, également membre des goupes {the} slowest runner {in all the world} et Sontag Shogun. Son premier album solo, « Spokes », paraîtra en octobre sous la bannière de Palaver Music.

Montreal, sweater up! For an exciting evening celebrating CINEMA and live SOUND. This Autumn, we present a full night of screenings and performances that will explore the boundaries of that age-old collaborative platform.

The event will feature FILMS : an early documentary by the legendary innovator Les Blank (US) which follows Lightnin’ Hopkins as he performs and meanders through his birthtown of Centerville, Texas (pop. 863); four short poetic film collages of still images by experimental filmmaker/professor Tomonari Nishikawa (JP); and a live double 16mm projector manipulation using a unique body of medical archives by Éric Poirier (CAN);

And SOUND : an orchestration of tape loops designed by Brooklyn-based sound artist szilárd; the avant-garde composite of voices, accordions, strings and percussions otherwise known as North, My Love (Montreal); and the cinematic lushness of Ascent of Everest (Nashville), currently touring the US, Canada and Europe!

A scentscape installation will bathe the space. A DJ set will follow.

Since the age of silent cinema, artists have sewn screen and sound together in a multitude of ways. Here in this Mile End hub for media arts, we will exercise the various forms this interdisciplinary union can take, and reveal just how open the space is for the future exploration of cinema+sound.

BIOs

Les Blank is a prize-winning independent filmmaker, best known for a series of poetic films that led John Rockwell, writing in The New York Times, to declare, "Blank is a documentarian of folk cultures who transforms anthropology into art." He has been called "a master of movies about the American idiom..." In 1990, Blank received the American Film Institute's Maya Deren Award for outstanding lifetime achievement as an independent filmmaker. His films have been screened and awarded by festivals all across the globe since the 1960s.

Tomonari Nishikawa started filmmaking in 2001, and his works have been screened at major film festivals, including NY Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, Singapore International and Berlinale. Nishikawa also creates installation works, one of them, "Building 945" received the 2008 Museum of Contemporary Cinema Foundation Grant. He currently teaches at Binghampton University, NY.

Éric Poirier is an up-and-coming Montreal-native filmmaker/videographer/curator who is working with 8 & 16mm found and historical footage as well as archival work to create a unique body of film and projections with strong roots in anthropology. He is currently pursuing a Masters in Film at the University of Montreal, studying with André Habib. Poirier is a co-founder of Ciné-Club at La Banque.

As anyone fortunate or canny enough to witness The Ascent of Everest’s symphonic dream-rock in a live context can attest, this Nashville eight-piece are something of a beautiful anomaly in the underground music world; producing delicate, sumptuously layered compositions that owe as much to the avant-garde of classical music as to anything originating from the realms of rock.

North, My Love is a giant accordion orchestra based in Montreal. Founded in late 2009 so as to bring Sound the Glorious upon the community. Their self-titled first album, recorded live underground at the Pines in June 2010, available in per...son or via post only. Soon they will return to the Pines to record a second album before taking leaves of absence for San Francisco and Japan at the end of November. The orchestra will be again running in 2012. New Players Are Welcome.

szilárd is the solo moniker of Jeremy Young, a guitarist and composer who has played with the bands {the} slowest runner {in all the world} and Sontag Shogun. His debut solo record, “Spokes”, will be released in October on Palaver Music.
